The School of Traction Power has four majors: railway locomotives, urban rail transit vehicle technology, EMU maintenance technology (driving and maintenance orientation) and railway locomotive vehicle manufacturing and maintenance. Currently there are more than 2,700 students in the School. Railway locomotives and urban rail transit vehicle technology are characteristic specialties of our School. Among them, the railway locomotive specialty is a provincial demonstration one, key specialty of higher vocational education in Shaanxi Province, excellent specialty of the professional comprehensive reform and construction project, national transportation demonstration point and first-class specialty in Shaanxi Province. The professional teaching team of railway locomotives is an excellent teaching team in Shaanxi Province. Its training bases are the training base with the central financial support, the China Railway locomotive driver training base and the Shaanxi Provincial Higher Vocational Education Training Base.
The School of Traction Power has four teaching and research sections, including railway locomotives, urban rail vehicles, EMU driving and maintenance, and railway locomotive vehicle manufacturing and maintenance. There are 71 faculty members, including 2 professors, 18 associate professors, and 20 with intermediate titles and 27 with junior titles. Among the faculty members, there are 32 with a master's degree and one is a Ph.D candidate. There is also 1 national famous teacher in rail transit industry and 1 famous teacher in Shaanxi Province.
The School attaches importance to the integration of production and education and the construction of the teaching staff. In recent years, it has built 6 Institute-level quality courses, presided over and participated in 15 provincial-level projects, 25 Institute-level scientific research projects, and published more than 100 papers, among which 80 articles are published in Chinese-language core journals and 5 articles are included in EI. The School has obtained 8 new practical technology patents and compiled 35 textbooks in cooperation with enterprises, three of which have won the first prize and second prize for Shaanxi University Excellent Teaching Materials. It has won the first prize and second prize in the National Railway Locomotive Teachers’ Teaching Skills Competition.
The students of the School have won in succession a number of awards: the first, second and third prizes in the National Urban Rail Transit and Control skills Competition, the National Competition for Professional Skills of Rail Train Drivers in Transportation Industry, the First National Railway Locomotive and Rolling Stock Professional (Diesel Locomotive Direction) Skill Competition and the Changxiang Cup National Vocational Education Railway Locomotive Professional Skill Competition; the first and second prizes in the national and Shaanxi Province Mathematical Modeling Contests; one third prize in Shaanxi Internet plus Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition; and 5 third prizes in Shaanxi Region Competition of National College Students’ Mechanical Innovation Design Competition
The training base of the School is centered on the cultivation and improvement of the skills of students, and is expanded by social services and training. It has built more than 50 on-campus training fields including bogies, locomotives, brakes, motor drag and control, locomotive simulation driving, subway train simulation driving, wheel pair detection, and cross-locating locomotive transmission training rooms, which can accommodate more than 1,000 students to carry out skills training for various projects. At the same time, the School has established 15 stable off-campus practice bases.
The School has a good employment rate. At present, most of the graduates are employed in railway bureaus and subway companies, and graduates have become the backbone of their respective positions. Wang Xiaowei, Tang Xingwu, Jia Yanwei and others have won honorary titles such as the National May 1 Labor Medal and the National Technical Expert. Wang Qifan, a graduate in 2012, has won the champion of CRH2A EMU All-rounder, the Locomotive Medal, and the title of the National Railway Technical Expert.
