The 2018 American College Students Mathematical Competition in Modeling was held from February 9th to 13th, Beijing time. A total of three teams from 9 students from our college participated in the competition for the first time. After four days and four nights of continuous fighting, all the competition links were successfully completed. Three English papers submitted by our college were successfully accepted by the American competition official, and the results will be announced in early May.
On the morning of February 9, Sun Mingkui, director of the basic department of the college, visited the teachers and students who were participating in the competition. Sun Mingkui praised the players for their spirits of making full use of the winter vacation time to prepare for the race and to take the competition seriously. At the same time, he hoped that the teachers and students will overcome all kinds of difficulties, and actively participate in the competition with full enthusiasm, encourage students to help each other during the competition, maintain a good competitive state, and achieve excellent results. He also wished the students a happy Spring Festival.
Before the competition, in order to better meet the 2018 American College Students Mathematical Competition in Modeling, the Mathematical Modeling guidance Group of our college organized a 6-day intensive training under the high attention and careful arrangement of the leaders of all the colleges.
Because this year was the first time for our college to participate in the US competition, during the training, the college invited Professor Xiao Huayong of Northwestern Polytechnical University to give detailed instruction and explanations for the teachers and students of our school. Meanwhile, Dong Shuqin from the English Teaching and Research Section was invited to do intensive English writing training for the participating groups.
The American College Students Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) is the only international mathematical modeling competition and the most influential mathematical modeling competition in the world. It is the originator of all kinds of mathematical modeling competitions. The competition began in 1985 and was jointly organized by the American Mathematical Society, the American Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the American Natural Science Foundation, and the National Security Agency. The competition consists of 3 people in one group. In 4 days, all the work from modeling, solving and verifying to writing English scientific papers is completed on the specified questions. Each year, the competition attracts famous universities from home and abroad such as Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Xiamen University. The participating teams are spread across five continents and have become one of the most famous international college competitions.
